KS5 PSHE – detailed curriculum

Students in Years 12 and 13 receive PSHE lessons for one hour per week, delivered by tutors in a ‘rolling’ period incorporated into the timetable. These lessons encourage active participation through group work, class discussions, and role-play, providing a safe environment for students to engage with social issues. They also help foster tolerance and respect for diverse religious, cultural, and moral values while supporting students’ confidence in their growing maturity and personal well-being.

The PSHE syllabus follows a spiral structure, similar to most subjects, revisiting and expanding on topics introduced in Key Stages 3 and 4. As students have matured, these topics are now explored in greater depth, with resources tailored to suit their developmental stage.

While PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education) is not a statutory requirement in sixth form (Key Stage 5), the government encourages its continuation. As a school, we remain committed to offering PSHE programs to support students’ transition to further education and life beyond school. Key Stage 5/Post-16 represents the final opportunity to ensure students have mastered key skills and strategies from their PSHE education, while also deepening their knowledge to prepare them for independent living and the next stage of their education or career.

At CCHS Sixth Form, lessons are adapted from EC Publishing’s two-year pack and complete KS5 PSHE, RSE, and careers resource (https://ecpublishing.co.uk/), alongside materials from the PSHE Association’s KS5 resources. Lessons are delivered using PowerPoint presentations, videos, and case studies, which serve as stimuli for discussion. Where relevant, current affairs are also integrated into lesson topics
